Over-Generalization Problem in GP

Over-generalization is a very subtle but the most common mistake that students of GP make!

In simple words, generalization means to theorize something (often using an inductive reasoning) so that it is applicable to all the member of a certain class or group. For example, John is a man and he has ears; Peter is a man and he too has ears; therefore, all men probably have ears. Here, the finding made in John and Peter is applied to all the class of human and a theory is given that “probably all men have ears”! This means generalization.

We all know that the above generalization is correct but it isn’t always the case. So, when a generalization is made without much thought and convincing reasons, it becomes over-generalization; a sweeping statement about something!
